    Valkyrie: Herfjötur

Herfjötur is one of the lesser-known Valkyries in Norse mythology, yet her name carries powerful significance. Meaning "host-fetter" or "army fetter," she is believed to have the ability to bind warriors in battle, either through fear, paralysis, or magical restraints that determine the course of a fight. As a chooser of the slain, she decides who will fall and who will be granted a place in Valhalla, reinforcing the Valkyries' role as both divine warriors and agents of fate. Some interpretations suggest that Herfjötur's name reflects a more mystical aspect of the Valkyries—one where they do not just guide warriors to Odin’s hall, but actively influence combat through supernatural means. Whether she is an individual entity or a title reflecting a particular Valkyrie’s role, Herfjötur represents the inescapable power of fate on the battlefield, a force both awe-inspiring and terrifying in equal measure.

  • Line art illustration coloring page of Celtic goddess Aine by THowell

    Goddess: Áine

Áine is a radiant figure in Irish mythology, revered as a goddess of the sun, fertility, and sovereignty. Often associated with midsummer and the warmth of the sun’s light, she embodies both abundance and power, blessing the land with prosperity. Legends tie her to Knockainey (Cnoc Áine) in County Limerick, where ancient rituals were performed in her honor, lighting fires to ensure bountiful harvests and the well-being of livestock. Áine is also linked to the realm of the fae, sometimes depicted as a fairy queen who moves between worlds, bestowing favor or misfortune as she sees fit. Her dual nature—as both a nurturing bringer of life and an assertive force of independence—reflects her deep-rooted connection to the cycles of nature, making her one of the most enduring and celebrated figures in Celtic tradition.
